For the sake of simplicity we will refer to your prop as a sword.

Cardinal Rules
  1. Never, ever thrust with a sword, it can force the tip of the core though the reinforcing and on this basis should never be done, most systems do not allow thrusting because of this and quite right to.
  2. Do not rest the sword on its tip at any time even if in a scabbard. This will drastically reduce the life span of any prop sword and ultimately rendering the sword unusable.
  3. Pull your blows.
Sensible use
  • Never hit hard edged object such as trees or cars, this will crush or rip the foam and render the sword unusable.
  • Pulling your blows will increase the life span of any sword.
  • If you can get a full length scabbard for the sword do, even a light weight scabbard will protect the blade from scraps and nicks while you are carrying it. Ensure that the scabbard is not to tight and that there are no rough surfaces on the inside as these will do more damage than good.
  • Avoid getting the sword soaking wet.
  • Wipe it with a damp cloth every now and then, dry it and apply a little talcum powder to help it slide smoothly out of the scabbard.
  • White spirit based compounds attack and degrade latex, these will ruin the finish on the sword. It has been known for the fumes given off from lanterns in side a tent to cause this degradation.
Storing
  • When storing the sword clean it before you put it away, any mud can by carefully wiped off with a damp cloth, then make sure it is dry before putting it away.
  • Ensure that it is not kept in a damp place like a garage or shed for any length of time, as moisture and mould will ruin it given time.
  • Make sure that you do not place anything on top of the sword, even light objects like other swords over time can crush the foams cell structure, render the sword unusable.
  • Keep it away from strong heat sources such as radiators or direct sunlight these can cause the latex to bubble.
  • Strong sunlight can be a huge problem when travelling to events, one way to avoid this is to place a light weight sheet over the sword whilst in the car, pack it last and remove it first.

and finally...
Please remember that these props are not indestructible, but if you follow this common sense advice there is no reason way you cannot enjoy your purchase for years to come.
